Premiere of "Madama Butterfly" at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Duisburg [ From category News ] [ Article date: 2017-01-16 ] [ From city Duisburg ] [ Country Germania ]   On Saturday 4th February at Theater Duisburg the Deutsche Oper am Rhein presents its new production of Giacomo Puccini’s opera ‘Madama Butterfly’. Joan Anton Rechi who recently staged Donizetti’s comic opera ‘L’elisir d’amore’ here together with designer Alfons Flores, focuses his production on “the tragedy of a Japanese woman", which draws its emotional power from the clash of two entirely different cultures and ways of life. The musical direction of ‘Madama Butterfly’, which Puccini himself regarded as his best and most modern work, lies in the hands of the 28-year-old conductor Aziz Shokhakimov. The winner of the Young Conductors Award at the 2016 Salzburg Festival will take charge of the ensemble of singers and the Duisburg Philharmonic in his first opera premiere for the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Sylvia Hamvasi, who could be heard for the first time in December as Líu in Puccini’s ‘Turandot’, now extends her already broad repertoire with the title role of Butterfly. Maria Kataeva, winner of the Master Singers of Nuremberg singing competition in Summer 2016, makes her debut as Cio-Cio-San’s confidante Suzuki. Eduardo Aldarén makes a guest appearance on the Rhine as Pinkerton, with Sharpless sung by Stefan Heidemann. Audiences will also be able to hear Florian Simson as Goro and Bruce Rankin as Prince Yamadori.
