Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg Opens The Bayreuth Festival Daniele Gatti Opens The Bayreuth Festival With Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg. The new production, directed by Matthias Davids, premieres on July 25.
The fifth Italian conductor after Toscanini, De Sabata, Erede, and Sinopoli to be invited to the podium of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, Daniele Gatti opens the 2025 edition of the most important Wagnerian event with a new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg), directed by German stage director Matthias Davids. This marks Gatti’s second festival opening in Bayreuth, after his debut there in 2008 with Parsifal, a title he conducted again on three further occasions until 2011. Before him, only Giuseppe Sinopoli had been invited to open the Festival, which was founded by Wagner in 1876. The premiere of Die Meistersinger is scheduled for July 25 at 4:00 PM, with additional performances running through August 22. The opening night will be broadcast live on German radio station BR-KLASSIK, with simultaneous video streaming on their website. The premiere will also be streamed on Deutsche Grammophon’s STAGE+ platform. In addition, a delayed screening of the inaugural performance will be shown in cinemas across Germany as part of the “Wagner im Kino” initiative, starting at 6:00 PM. The July 25 premiere will also be televised on a delayed basis on Sunday, July 27 at 8:15 PM on the German-language channel 3sat.
Currently Principal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden and recently appointed the next Music Director of the Teatro del Maggio Fiorentino, Daniele Gatti has extensive experience with the Wagnerian repertoire. He has conducted Lohengrin in Bologna and Milan; Parsifal in Rome, Bayreuth, Zurich, Paris, and New York; Tristan und Isolde in Paris and Rome; and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in Zurich, Salzburg, and Milan. In 2026, he will return to conduct Parsifal at the Semperoper Dresden in a production directed by Floris Visser.
Taking the stage in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg are Georg Zeppenfeld as the shoemaker and poet Hans Sachs, Michael Nagy as the orthodox Sixtus Beckmesser, Michael Spyres as the young knight Walther von Stolzing, and Christina Nilsson as Eva. The sets are by Andrew D. Edwards, costumes by Susanne Hubrich, lighting by Fabrice Kebour, and choreography by Simon Eichenberger. The dramaturgy is by Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz.
